Parenting: Are Children a Blessing, or a Curse?

I've heard frustrated parents question from time to time, "Are children part of the curse of Adam and Eve?" I want you to know today that even on their worst days, your children are a blessing from God. In fact children, and their parents, were an integral part of God's plan from the very beginning.

Regarding God's directive to the first parents, Genesis 1:28a states, “And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it..." The command to be fruitful and multiply carries with it the responsibility to parent the offspring. God's marvelous plan for us to parent children was at the forefront of his plan for mankind on this earth. And this happened before Adam and Eve sinned.

It is mankind's sin and leaning towards sinful actions that interferes with our ability to parent. Impatience, frustration, and the temptation to explode when kids make mistakes are all indications that the curse of sin is at work in our lives. None of us is perfect. Our children pick up on our imperfections and learn quickly which buttons to push and which to avoid.

God loves children and planned that you and I, with our imperfections, would raise them to know and to love him. The curse brought on by sin certainly affects each parent-child relationship but with God's help, the family can grow strong. Filling your lives and home with God's Word, grace-filled interactions, and prayerful decision-making will counterbalance the effects of sin. God will help you to love your children even when they are at their worst.

In future blogs we will look at our roles as parents through the lens of Scripture. Sin has influenced parents and children throughout previous generations. We will discover together some practical ways to counteract the impact of the sinful nature while raising godly children in this generation.
